
Originally built in 1603 as the official Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa shogun, Ieyasu. The wide moat, massive stone walls and heavy yet elaborate gates are still impressive. Nijo-jo Castle was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
